Maria Dalli
María Dalli is an artist based in Valencia, Spain. Her artwork exhibits a primary
interest in simplifying the complex through improvised lines that form abstract
faces and figures, using a minimalist style. Her work includes both original
pieces with acrylic or gouache as well as digital illustrations.
All her pieces are based on a first improvised line, a line that she plays with in
order to create human shapes. The stereotyped human figure is deconstructed to
make it less realistic and, at the same time, more real, expressing ideas around
human vulnerability, human differences, or suffering. And yet, through her work
she attempts to exhibit concepts such as the universal beauty of the human being,
equality, or the beauty of asymmetry.
Dalli is self-taught; lacking formal fine art studies except for some drawing
lessons. With Ph.D. and postdoctoral studies in human rights law, in 2020 she
decided to combine her academic career with her passion for art and design. In a
matter of months, she has signed collaborations with international companies,
including art galleries for the original pieces as well as art print companies for
the digital works, such as Minus Art.
